Walk Daily Post "Day Six" Supplement, Saturday 11 Jan 2003 Where is it? Low level hill walk between Bangor and Conwy. What's the attraction? If you want good views and brisk exercise while keeping clear of higher slopes, this should do the trick. How do you get there? Leave the A55 coast road between Conwy and Bangor at the turnoff for Aber. Drive through the village to parking area, right, where track to Aber Falls starts; it's just before a bridge that takes the lane left across a stream. How long will it take? Allow 3-31/2 hours walk time - plus a bus ride of under ten minutes. Let's go! This walk keeps to lanes and clear, well-worn paths on lower slopes. But ice patches are virtually certain and some snow possible, so take care and make sure you're properly equipped. If there's heavy snow, don't go; if you set out and the going is treacherous, turn back. Cross the bridge from the car park and follow the lane steeply upwards above the fast-flowing Afon Anafon. When the lane ends in a small parking area take the stile to your left and up the open slope ahead. The path quickly becomes clear, taking you almost due east along the line of a Roman road with the sea on your left and the bare foothills of the Carneddau rising to your right. Fork left from the Roman road at the first crossroads, following a signpost for Llanfairfechan. Soon, the path slopes down quite steeply. Follow 'North Wales Path' markers, ignoring other trails which crisscross the uplands here. You emerge on a lane at the top of Llanfairfechan. Go left, heading down to where the main east-west road through the centre of the village meets the north-south street that you're on. Frequent buses head west towards Bangor from here. Get off at Aber and walk through the village and up the lane to your car. John Tanner
