Margarine Works

What is now Classic Ales was in the past more popularly known as the Margarine works it was owned and run by the Pure Margarine company, they also packed Fairy soap. But it was originally built by the Penrhyn estates as a factory for making slates for schools. They moved factory from the harbor at Bangor when they redeveloped it. It was also a Woolen factory.

The factory was powered by an over fed water wheel, through a channel all the way from a weir up by the old bridge, some of the weir can still be seen under the expressway bridge. The slate was brought from the mines of Bethesda by road and then worked to make slates for the class rooms. When the slates were finished they were shipped off by railway, it is one of the reasons that Aber had a railway station.

The location of the factory in Aber was so that it could be powered for free by a large water wheel from the nearby river as can be seen in the next photo. The wheel is tucked up under the trees
